Our family has become a tribe of sourdough junkies. We have been asked multiple times to share a list of our must-have sourdough bread tools, so you here go! We look forward to every time we get to enjoy one of our favorite recipes. Sourdough enthusiasts like us recommend using a quality scale that measures in grams, Dutch whisk, spurtle, banneton baskets, jars for storing discard and starter, a Dutch oven for baking, and a good quality lame to cut the loaf before baking. Our sourdough bread recipes use an active starter, good filtered water, a clean quality Italian flour (Caputo Tipo 00), and a good quality mineral-rich salt (Redmond’s Real Salt).
Sourdough Equipment
This list might look long, but each tool has its purpose and once you make the initial investment it’s worth every penny. Sourdough bread can be created the old fashioned way too, but our family has discovered first-hand that these items save a lot of time. Afterall, it is a 3-day process when done properly to ensure that perfect sourdough taste and texture every time. Enjoy!
- Scale (weigh everything in grams)
- Dutch Whisk (stainless steel with a long handle)
- Skinny Spurtle (for managing the starter & discard dough)
- Banneton Proofing Baskets, Lame (knife for scoring), and Scraper
- Quart Jars for the Starter & Discard (I love these pretty jars)
- Cast Iron Dutch Oven (for baking)
- Caputo Tipo 00 Flour (no glyphosate or added “enriched franken-chemicals”)
- Redmond’s Real Salt (unprocessed, additive-free, and mined in the US)
- Stainless Steel Drain Strainer (optional, but this helps catch the gluey sourdough bits from getting stuck in your sink)
- Sink Strainer Disposable Mesh Bags (this also helps catch the sourdough bits in the sink – just cover the drain strainer)
- Plastic Bowl Covers (these disposable covers are used for the rising and proofing steps)
- Quart Size Lids for Starter & Discard (I prefer these over the ring lids that come with the jar, plus the colors make it easy to differentiate starter from discard in the refrigerator)
Our family’s favorite sourdough bread recipe will be shared in a future post. I can almost smell it cooking now! Happy baking! 🙂
