If you have spent decades grabbing whatever moisturizer, foundation, or mascara that was on sale at the drugstore or trusting counter staff at department stores who promised a $150 jar of cream would erase twenty years, you are not alone. For most of our lives, “anti-aging” meant heavy silicones, synthetic fragrances, harsh chemical peels, and long lists of ingredients we couldn’t pronounce. Now we are thrown into the world of mature skincare, and it’s even more complicated than ingredients alone because our bodies are changing with each beautiful year we grace this planet!
I started waking up to this during perimenopause, and now that I’m officially in menopause my skincare routine has taken on an entirely new look. In addition, my understanding of toxicity has taken on a life of its own, inspiring me to find better options.
Some women my age resort to botox, fillers, extreme/deep facial peels, thread lifts, aggressive RFs (radio frequency), and high-heat lasers to smooth wrinkles, strip away sun damage, and tighten skin. No judging here, but after much research, that is not the direction I want to take with the largest organ of my body (my skin). I learned the long-term risks of these “treatments” fall significantly short of the over-hyped promises made to look eternally young, and can actually cause some interesting health situations that I am not interested in risking.
Why Non-Toxic Skincare Matters More Than Ever After 50
By the time we reach our 50s, mature skin undergoes structural shifts: estrogen levels drop, collagen production slows down, the natural moisture barrier thins, face and neck muscles weaken, fascia tightens, and cell turnover decreases. Mature skin is naturally more permeable, delicate, and prone to dryness and/or sensitivity.
When you apply traditional department store and drugstore formulas loaded with parabens, synthetic fragrances, phthalates, and aggressive preservatives, a few things happen:
- Thinner skin absorbs faster (ugh)!
- Heavy synthetic fragrances and harsh alcohols strip what little lipid protection our mature skin has left, leaving it dull, reactive, and prone to even more inflammation. (I find it hard to believe any company would ethically and knowingly do this to us, but that’s a topic for another day.)
- Many conventional wrinkle-smoothers rely on silicone to temporarily fill in wrinkles. This silicone gives the illusion of smoothness for a few hours, but does nothing to actually nourish, firm, or hydrate our mature skin underneath for long-term results.
Clean anti-aging is not about chasing impossible youth; it’s about giving our skin ingredients that support its health, repair its barrier, and let our natural beauty shine through.
The Shift: Why It’s Time to Focus on Yourself
For decades, many of us spent our time, energy, and money taking care of everyone else—families, careers, aging loved ones, and endless daily obligations. If you’re anything like me, skincare was often reduced to a rushed one or two-minute routine early in the morning and maybe again right before crash-landing into bed.
Taking a deliberate step toward clean, non-toxic self-care in your 50s is a quiet declaration: your health, your body, and your well-being matter. Choosing low-toxic products is an act of preventative wellness and self-love. I learned that when we simplify our routine, ditch the hidden hormone disruptors, and invest in clean, high-performing formulas, we are choosing to give ourselves the same care we’ve given others for years. Moving Away from the Department Store & Drugstore Aisles: 4 Clean Brands That Get Mature Skin Right
Making the switch from conventional beauty counters doesn’t mean sacrificing results. Modern mature clean beauty relies on sophisticated botanical actives, bio compatible oils, and clinically tested plant-based retinol alternatives. I trained myself how to figure this out, and you can do it too! Simply use one of the apps online that quickly highlight each ingredient in the products you have used for decades. EWG’s Skin Deep® database is a great place to start. Does your favorite product’s ingredient list include hormone disruptors, cause cancer, or damage cells? Have you ever looked to see? Seriously, have you? What about the new low-tox products coming onto the scene. How do their ingredients compare?
Here are four standout brands I believe are leading the way for 50+ mature skin because I have personally tested them out:
1. OSEA Malibu: Ocean-Powered Firming & Deep Hydration
- If your main skin struggle is loss of elasticity, wrinkles, crepey texture, or deep dryness, OSEA is a game changer. I have been using these products for almost a year now, and have seen significant improvements in my skin.
- Why it works for 50+ mature skincare: Marine bio-retinols and seaweed-derived hydration restore plumpness and resilience to your face and body without causing the peeling or redness linked to synthetic retinoids.
- Where to start: The Dream Bio-Retinol Body Serum made that crepey skin disappear on my arms, their Hyaluronic Sea Serum is great for deep facial hydration, the Undaria Algae™ Body Wash is amazing for the perfect shave, and the iconic Undaria Algae Body Oil for legs (this literally made the scales on my legs disappear). Here you can find all of my OSEA Malibu favorites and curated collection for 50’s+ and aging skin.
2. DIME Beauty: Clean Science & Gentle Cell Turnover
- DIME is affordable and has science-backed results. Every ingredient is EWG Verified® and rated for low hazard.
- Why it works for 50+ mature skincare: DIME’s anti-aging focus relies on Bakuchiol—a plant-based retinol alternative that boosts cell turnover and collagen synthesis without causing irritation, dryness, or sun sensitivity.
- Where to start: The TBT Serum and Cream pair for night repair, the Super Firm Serum to target expression lines and loss of firmness, and don’t forget the Volume Mascara and Eyebrow Enhancing Gel. This mascara absolutely changed my life. It stays on, doesn’t flake or smudge, and is easy to get off at the end of a crazy day. Here you can find all of my Dime Anti-Aging and Beauty favorites and curated collection for 50’s+ and aging skin.
3. Kosas: Makeup That Doubles as Hydrating Skincare
- Traditional department store foundations can be the enemy of our mature skin—they often settle into fine lines, emphasize things—lol, and dry out our complexion by mid-day. Kosas revolutionized clean beauty by creating “skin-improving” options.
- Why it works for 50+ mature skincare: Kosas complexion products sit lightly on mature skin. They provide coverage while actively hydrating our faces throughout the day.
- Where to start: The Revealer Concealer (doesn’t cake around our delicate eye area), their Revealer Skin-Improving Foundation SPF 25 for a smooth clean look, and the Brow Pop Nano Eye Pencil for the perfect eyebrows (because we tend to lose those precious hairs as the years go on, lol) and this one doesn’t make it look like you have 2 caterpillars where your eyebrows should be. It looks natural! Here you can find all of my Kosas Anti-Aging and Beauty favorites and curated collection for 50’s+ and aging skin.
4. Primally Pure: Whole-Food Nourishment for Deep Body Hydration
- When your skin’s moisture barrier thins out, standard water-based lotions and synthetic aluminum-based deodorants don’t cut it anymore. Primally Pure relies on organic fats like grass-fed tallow and botanical oils that mimic the skin’s natural lipid structure.
- Why it works for 50+ mature skincare: Instead of sitting on top of dry skin or irritating delicate tissue with artificial fragrances and heavy metals like aluminum, their ingredients sink in deep to repair the moisture barrier and soothe our hormonally changing skin.
- Where to start: Their Organic Deodorant (gentle, aluminum-free protection that won’t irritate sensitive armpits), Whipped Body Butter (rich tallow and mango butter to instantly soften crepey, dry skin—this stuff is crazy good), and Tinted Lip Oil (plumps and hydrates thinning mature lips while smoothing fine lines). This lip oil has completely changed my lips, and it even tastes good which is a bonus. Here you can find all of my Primally Pure Anti-Aging and Beauty favorites and curated collection for 50’s+ and aging skin.
One of my favorite aging beauty hacks is castor oil. Putting a little on my elevens before bed has been a game changer! To learn more about the benefits of (and how we use) castor oil, check out the “Castor Oil Packs – A Secret Weapon for Wellness” blog post. In the near future, we’ll discuss the importance of lymphatic drainage and how working with our fascia is so important. Did you know that’s a beauty hack also?
When it comes to store-bought products, the databases are there for you to check ingredient safety in the products you have trusted for so many decades. Take the time to do it, I double-dog dare you! My eyes were opened to some very scary realities, and now I am taking the time to make sure my beauty routine is helping me (as promised) and not harming me. I choose low-tox self-love when it comes to my mature skincare routine and beauty products. How about you? 🫶
