I recently caught what appears to be one of the latest (not-so-fun) flus, colds, bugs, or whatever you want to call it without using an ounce of profanity. Since our family has been moving to a more holistic, low-toxic lifestyle over the years, I thought this might be a good time to try other options when working to heal and recover from a temporary “bug”. In years past, when the first tickle of a sore throat or the heavy fog of sinus pressure set in, it was the norm for me to reach for the brightest-colored and best marketed cold medicine labeled “SEVERE”, “FAST-MAX”, “INSTANT RELIEF”, or “RAPID-CLEAR” on the pharmacy shelf.
However, since then I learned that many conventional “multi-symptom” relievers rely on artificial dyes, synthetic flavors, pill coatings, and chemical decongestants. These ingredients (some of which are outlawed outside of the United States) have been found to create side effects including the jitters, insomnia, stomach upset, dehydration, irritability, hyperactivity, allergic reactions, liver strain, and potentially damaged DNA. What?! This is just what we need when we are already sick, are you kidding me? So I researched, and researched some more. Like most research as it relates to our health, I was horrified at my findings.
So what’s next then? I learned first-hand that transitioning to a holistic recovery plan doesn’t mean sacrificing effectiveness; it means choosing targeted tools that work with your body’s natural defense systems rather than simply masking them. In an effort to help save you some time, I’ve decided to share. Here’s what I did…
Clearing the Path to Breathing
A cornerstone of natural recovery is mechanical clearance—literally washing away the viral load. Over time, my best friend (morning, evening, and sometimes mid-day) became the NeilMed Sinus Rinse. This easy rinse process uses a large-volume, low-pressure saline system to flush out mucus, allergens, and debris. Clinical research published in The Journal of Family Practice and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) confirms that saline irrigation significantly improves quality of life and reduces the severity of sinus symptoms by physically thinning mucus and soothing inflamed membranes.
Unlike chemical sprays, the NeilMed Sinus Rinse carries no risk of “rebound” congestion, making it a sustainable choice for long-term relief. After watching several videos on how to do it right (and not feel like I was drowning), I discovered that if you repeat the sound “kuh” over and over throughout the flush of each nostril, it helps tremendously. I am so proud of myself for graduating to this level of self-care. It’s rewarding to see what comes out with each rinse, and knowing it is no longer causing problems in my body. The NeilMed system is easier to use than the traditional neti pot, but same concept. I am a believer, and this is now part of my “medicine bag”.
Targeted Support Without the “Fog”
I am living proof that homeopathy offers a gentle yet proven alternative for those seeking internal support without the side effects of traditional antihistamines or steroids. Products from Boiron, such as Oscillococcinum for relief of flu-like symptoms (body aches, headache, fever, chills, and fatigue), SinusCalm (for sinus pain relief, runny nose, congestion, and headache), ColdCalm (relief for sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, sore throat), ThroatCalm (relieves scratchy, red or dry throat, and hoarseness), and AllergyCalm (relief from allergy and hay fever symptoms of sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes or throat). These products utilize highly diluted natural substances to address specific symptoms with a non-drowsy formula. Boiron also offers children’s versions. My first and favorite homeopathic option for headaches and muscle pain will always be Arnica Montana 30C, but the above blends knocked down several bad symptoms at once.
I have personally used the above homeopathic solutions with successful results. They are easy to use (just put 5 pellets under the tongue & dissolve). They are designed to be non-drowsy and free from the artificial colors and chemical ingredients found in many over the counter pills and liquid elixirs. Similarly, for the dreaded sore throat, I found that Fisherman’s Friend Throat Drops provided a potent punch for what was a somewhat miserable situation. These are extra strong cough suppressant lozenges that rely on natural menthol and eucalyptus oil. These lozenges are no joke, and act as a powerful oral anesthetic and cough suppressant without the need for synthetic numbing agents.
A Nightly Magnesium Soak for Immune Support
To round out a holistic recovery routine, I used the restorative power of a nightly Epsom salt bath. It was my treat, and I looked forward to it each day. Chemically known as magnesium sulfate, Epsom salt dissolves in warm water in the tub and is believed to be absorbed through the skin, helping to replenish the body’s magnesium levels which are often depleted during times of physical stress or illness. Beyond muscle relaxation, the high magnesium content helps to regulate neurotransmitters that are directly tied to sleep and stress reduction. This nightly ritual served a dual purpose for me: the moist heat acted as a natural decongestant for clogged airways, while the transition from a warm bath to a cooler bedroom environment mimicked my body’s natural circadian rhythm (signaling to my nervous system that it is time for deep, immune-boosting sleep). The benefits of magnesium were icing on the cake. I found this to be an extremely powerful assist during my healing.
The Power of a Quiet Mind
We talked about this a lot in “The Year I Stopped Wearing a Bra—”How” We Got Our Health Back”. Perhaps the most overlooked element of healing is the state of your nervous system. When you are ill, your body is in a high-energy battle; staying in a state of high stress (sympathetic “fight or flight”) can actually divert resources away from your immune response. Techniques like deep breathing, yoga nidra, and conscious rest activate the parasympathetic nervous system, sending a signal to your body that it is safe to prioritize repair. Research suggests that voluntary relaxation can influence the immune system’s inflammatory response, helping you recover with more resilience and less exhaustion.
