Our Homemade Sunscreen Recipe

Each ingredient in this recipe has a specific purpose. Based on the research we’ve done, the ingredient either helps protect against harmful rays, helps with waterproofing the sunscreen, or reducing the bright white zinc oxide tone. This is a nontoxic version that we love and have been using for years.

Instructions

Combine all these ingredients but essential oils in a double boiler and melt until they are well combined. Turn off heat and add essential oil. Then pour the mixture into small glass containers and let cool.

SPF & Ingredient Notes  

The finished product is somewhat runny and may separate. Simply shake before each use.  Re-apply hourly if in direct sunlight.

  • Carrot Seed Oil = 35-40 SPF
  • Red Raspberry Seed Oil = 28-50 for UVA and 8 for UVB
  • Jojoba Oil = 4 SPF
  • Avocado Oil = 4 SPF
  • EVOO = 8 SPF
  • Shea Butter = 3-4 SPF
  • Cocoa Butter = 6 SPF
  • Coconut Oil = 1 SPF
  • Vitamin E = no SPF; provides extra protection against acute UVB damage & protects against cell mutation
  • Zinc Oxide = sits on top of the skin (non-nano means it will not absorb into your skin) and creates protective layer from harmful sun rays
  • Bees wax = helps make the sunscreen waterproof 😊
  • Cacao powder helps tint the sunscreen
  • Vanilla Essential Oil = natural insect repellant
